Respect for the Aged Day 2023

Japan is only one of two countries in the world with a public holiday dedicated to older people. ‘Respect for the Aged Day’ takes place on Monday September 18^th next. On this day every year in Japan, older people are honoured for what they teach us and for their contribution to society.

We wholeheartedly agree with and support this ethos. Private HomeCare has made a donation to Age Action Ireland in honour of Respect for the Aged Day.

Last year, we asked people in our community to nominate older people they would like to honour. We got a tremendous response and had the difficult task of picking 10 worthy winners. Read each of their stories here. They will inspire and motivate you.

This year we decided to look inward, a wonderful suggestion from our Team Lead, Emergency On Call, Beverley Gannon. Thank-you Beverley! Private HomeCare employs 32 people determined as “older”  by the World Health Organisation (note this definition is only to facilitate comparison of global statistics and trends.)  These 32 people work across all departments in Private HomeCare, including home support workers and office staff.

We invite adults of all ages to work with us, and find that in home care service provision, life experience, compassion and empathy are extremely valuable traits. This year’s theme : Challenging Ageism- Reframing How We Think, Feel and Act towards aging and older persons

Private HomeCare has been part of the Cpl group since 2011, with founder Elizabeth Nicholson as Managing Director since she started the company 34 years ago,  in 1984. Cpl is part of the Japanese multi-national group OSI, another link to Japan for Lucan based Private Homecare. Private HomeCare will continue to recognise this day each year. Perhaps one day Ireland will have a public holiday dedicated to older people ?
