Course Outline

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skills and competence to enable them to care for and
address the needs of a person and their family after the diagnosis of a life-limiting illness, in a dignified, inclusive and
holistic manner.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of your palliative care training, you will be able to:

Discuss the philosophy and principles of palliative care.
Summarise the structure and organisation of palliative care services to include the role played by the multi-disciplinary team and diverse family structures in the provision of care for a terminally ill person.
Discuss the role of the support worker in the promotion of key issues such as life quality, self-esteem, respect, privacy and dignity in palliative care work.
Explore different attitudes to death and dying to include an understanding of individual patterns of grief, bereavement and loss.
Employ a range of communication strategies and processes which are central to the work in palliative care.
Apply a person-centered approach to caring for a person in the last days of their life to include the provision of supportive and holistic care promoting safety, dignity, respect and comfort
Respond appropriately to the needs of the person who is confused in the last days of life.
Work effectively and with great sensitivity in relation to the dying person and their significant others in a palliative care setting.
Use the range of skills required from a palliative support worker in relation to end of life care.

Duration

4 days spread across 2 weeks.

Location

Lucan Centre, Lucan, Dubiln. This is accessible by frequent public transport buses. Full details will be provided upon booking.

Cost

The cost is €200 per person for the entire course, including all training materials.

Anna Lloyd - Our Home Care Training Manager

Anna Lloyd is our in-house home care Training Manager. She designs and delivers all of our in-house training for both professional and family carers, for QQI modules right through to Major level, as well as short half day courses for family carers.

Anna Lloyd's background and qualifications

With a decade of experience in the home care industry before qualifying as a certified trainer, learners benefit tremendously from Anna’s work experience insights as well as course theory.

She holds the following qualifications: Professional Diploma in Education, Higher Diploma in Business in Marketing, Certificate in First Line Business Management and National Diploma in Humanities in Montessori Education.

Anna combines her practical knowledge with her training skills to ensure all learners achieve their goals, in a friendly and supportive learning environment.
Previously Anna has volunteered in Sri Lanka. She has recently taken up boxing as a hobby!

We realise that many people entering the care profession may not have been in a classroom for many years, even decades and can be fearful. We recognise this. Please do not worry! All classes are delivered based not only on knowledge but also with friendliness, support (and humour).

Assisted by Training and Compliance Co-ordinator, Linda Chadwick, whether you are an experienced carer or new to the profession, you are in safe and supportive hands. Anna and Linda have worked together for many years and know all of our carers by name.
