We spoke to Elizabeth Nicolson, Private Home Care founder, and discussed how she founded Private HomeCare and her tips for female founders.
I thought I would share my story of how I started my business 30 years ago. I was a young mum with two children. We were like any young married couple with babies, we didn’t have a lot of money. So I got the idea to provide care at home.
I applied to get a place on a Start Your Own Business course in Dublin. Shortly afterwards I received a letter telling me I was unsuccessful. It was Christmas time so I had to wait until after the holidays to ask why I was unsuccessful.
I had never started a business before, but no-one was going to tell me I couldn’t do it! I fought against that decision and eventually secured my place on the course. I was one of only two from the course who went on to start a business.
In 2010, I sold my business to CPL. I remain MD of Private HomeCare, a role I have worked at fulltime since 1989.
Here are my 5 tips for all female founders:
1. Never give up
2. Don’t take no for an answer
3. Be stoic
4. Keep smiling
5. Enjoy starting your own business, it’s fun!
